CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Lines at the DMV are nothing new for North Carolinians, and in many ways, nothing is getting better.
Wait times are so long in some locations that people have resorted to camping out or waiting in line for multiple days hoping they can get in.
The DMV encourages people to make an appointment online, but those often have to be made months ahead of time, and can require drivers travel a considerable distance just to get an appointment.
”I’ve checked all of the locations and they don’t have appointments until December,” one woman said. “When you call, you don’t get an answer and I’ve actually tried the DMV in Fayetteville and it was just as bad.”
The DMV has acknowledged the problem, citing a 10% staff vacancy rate and an overwhelming demand. The agency has been trying for years trying to improve the situation, and has asked the state legislature to fund more personnel.
In recent months, the DMV has rolled out self-service kiosks, but there are only three statewide. One is in northwest Charlotte inside the Harris Teeter on Smith Farm Road.
DMV commissioner Wayne Goodwin said during a public meeting Tuesday that the pilot program for those machines is a year behind schedule, but expansion options are being explored.
