WPD: Moped driver thrown over side of overpass after hit by truck

June 3, 2020 at 8:24 AM EDT – Updated June 4 at 11:56 AM

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Police have identified and charged a moped driver who was seriously injured in a fall off a Wilmington overpass following a traffic crash Wednesday morning.

According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, 32-year-old Ian Jones was driving his moped east on MLK Parkway near the McRae Street overpass around 7:30 a.m. when he clipped a truck’s trailer while changing lanes.

Police said Jones was weaving back and forth between lanes and hit the truck as it was trying to pass him.

Jones was thrown off the moped and fell approximately 60 feet over the side of the overpass onto the ground below.

Firefighters rescued Jones, who was awake and talking, and he was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Jones was charged with failure to maintain lane control, expired registration, and no insurance. No charges will be filed against the truck driver.
