WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Investigators with the Wilmington Police Department ask for assistance in a homicide investigation.
According to WPD, police responded to a ShotSpotter alert at around 12:30 Friday morning near Kenwood and Market Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a car had crashed into a utility pole and both people in the car had been shot. The driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Jalisa Bellamy, passed away at the hospital. The 35-year-old male passenger was treated and released.
“She was just a loving person… a hard working person,” Said Pam Whitfield, Bellamy’s mom.
Whitfield says Bellamy drove for public transit and when she wasn’t working, she was with her two sons. Whitfield says she can’t understand who would do this… and why there is so much gun violence in the city.
“With all the killings that have been going on in this city lately… I’m at a loss for words,” said Whitfield. “It’s just sad…. it sad… it’s beyond sad.”
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to both victims’ families,” said a spokesperson with WPD. “This is a horrible tragedy for them to endure at Christmas.”
“Not to take a moment, a second, an hour, a day for granted,” said Whitfield. “To love your family, always, unconditionally because you don’t know… you do not know when they last breath would happen.”
