WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – An employee for the Washington Public Works Department was killed in a tractor accident Tuesday afternoon, according to officials.
Washington City Manager Jonathan Russell says the employee was mowing a ditch bank along a drainage canal behind the Pizza Inn and Econo Lodge around noon when his tractor rolled over him and killed him.
Flowers and a cross were found at the scene of the accident Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s like losing a member of the family,” said Adam Waters, the public works director in Washington.
“He’s been with us for 8 years. Always happy, always an encouraging word, and very conscientious of his work.”
While the name of the employee has not been released, Russell said “he was a great and well-liked guy and this is a big shock for everyone that knows him.”
Russell says OSHA has been called in to investigate, along with Washington police and other agencies.
“Stick together,” said Waters to employees who knew him.
“The guys need to all bond together and help each other get through this, and especially keep the family in their thoughts and prayers. They’re going through a really difficult time and a tremendous loss.”
