911 records from Leland death investigation sealed

August 2, 2022 By WECT

LELAND, N.C. (WECT) – Investigators have not released any additional information on a fatal shooting which took place in Leland more than a week ago.

The Leland Police Department says Kwaze Walker of Lake Waccamaw was killed in a shooting shortly before 4 a.m. at a home on the 9400 block of Night Harbor Drive on July 31.

WECT requested the 911 records, which are typically public record under state law, from the incident to shed more light on what happened.

Investigators requested to seal those records, and Superior Court Judge Clinton Rowe signed orders on Aug. 9 to seal the 911 calls from public record.

Per the order, the court found that releasing the calls would jeopardize the investigation and pose a risk to the safety of witnesses.

Devin Antone, 19, of Lake Waccamaw, has been arrested and charged with Assault With a Deadly Weapon With The Intent To Kill or Inflict Serious Injury and First Degree Kidnapping in connection with the incident.

However, according to a press release by the Town of Leland, Antone is not believed to be responsible for Walker’s death. Antone reportedly arrived at the scene with Walker and is not regarded as a suspect in his death by investigators. Officers found Walker suffering from a gunshot wound inside the residence, and he was pronounced dead after first responders attempted to stabilize them.
