WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – UNCW’s Sydney Schneider became the first player in the program’s history to be selected in National Women’s Soccer League draft Wednesday night.
The Seahawk goalkeeper was selected 29th overall by the Washington Spirit.
“I could not be happier for Sydney,” UNCW Coach Chris Neal said. “She is so deserving of this chance. She is a great example that dreams can be realized in a UNCW Seahawk jersey. I speak for our entire team when I say we are elated and so excited to see what the future holds for her.”
Schneider, the inaugural winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2019, earned First-Team All-CAA and NCCSIA All-State distinction as a junior after posting a 1.06 goals against average while stopping 73.5 percent of the shots she faced.
She ranks in the Top 10 all-time in several categories at UNCW, including fifth in career goals against average (1.20 average), fourth in career wins (18) and sixth in career shutouts (9).
