BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Investigators say lightning started a fire that destroyed a workshop behind a Southport home early Thursday morning.
According to a Facebook post from the Southport Fire Department, crews arrived at the home off of Bethel Road at around 3 a.m. to find the workshop fully-involved.
“Minor exposure damage to nearby boat shed • No injuries • Crews clearing scene,” the SFD posted shortly after 5:30 a.m.
Todd Coring, the assistant volunteer fire chief, said investigators determined the fire was caused by a lightning strike. WECT Chief Meteorologist Gannon Medwick said approximately six lightning strikes were detected within a ten-mile radius of Southport around 1:30 a.m.
