NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Two work trucks, two trailers, and two mini excavators that were stolen from a Castle Hayne construction company were recovered near a Northeast Cape Fear River boat ramp on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the agency received a report from Ansco & Associates that the construction equipment were stolen early Wednesday morning from their location on Crowatan Road.
Investigators were able to track down the stolen items to the Castle Hayne boat ramp at the Northeast Cape Fear River. The sheriff’s office used drones to search the area and noticed oil slicks on the river water. Dive teams were brought in and determined that at least some of the equipment was submerged near the boat ramp.
After about 12 hours, the dive teams along with Phillips Towing were able to recover all of the stolen equipment from the river.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation into the theft is ongoing.
