LELAND, N.C. (WECT) – One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Brunswick County Sunday night.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a domestic call in the 8600 block of Wanets Landing Road near Leland around 6 p.m.
“My husband shot at me with a .45 on our porch,” a woman told dispatchers in a 911 call that was released on Monday. The woman said she didn’t think she was injured and that the bullet struck behind her head while she was in a chair.
The caller said her husband was still armed and remained on the porch, and would likely shoot her if she went outside.
“Please send someone quick cause I’m afraid he’s going to shoot me again,” she said. When asked what started the incident, she said “honest to God, I don’t have a clue.”
She did say her husband had been drinking heavily that night and repeatedly begged the dispatcher to send help.
“Good lord, please get someone out here. I’m afraid to walk out back again. They need to proceed with caution when they show up. He’s ready to shoot anyone,” she said. “He will be very volatile when the deputies show, I can tell you that. I’m scared he will try to kill all of them — and me too.”
The 17-minute phone call ends as deputies arrived.
Once at the home, the sheriff’s office says gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the man who was struck and later died at the scene. No deputies were injured in the shooting.
Sheriff John Ingram and District Attorney Jon David have requested the SBI investigate the incident.
The man killed in the shooting was identified in the 911 recording by the caller, but WECT has opted not to publish his identity until getting confirmation from the SBI.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post Monday morning.
