WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A New Hanover High School teacher received a major surprise Wednesday.
Elizabeth Felts, an English and service learning teacher at NHHS, was named New Hanover County Schools’ Overall Educator of the Year.
“As a teacher, I believe my role is to help students see their value and see how they can leverage their talents and strengths to make a positive impact,” said Felts. “While I utilize that philosophy every day, it is most apparent in our midterm project for my Honors Service Learning class. These opportunities for students to see their own value and how they use that to make a positive impact has a ripple effect that I am profoundly grateful to watch unfold far beyond my classroom.”
As part of the honor, Felts won a 2020 Toyota RAV4.
Felts told WECT that she had never owned or driven a new car before.
In fact, she said the current car she drives – also a RAV4 – is so old it has a tape deck in it.
