HALLSBORO, N.C. (WECT) – A Chadbourn man is accused of assaulting and stabbing another man at a Columbus County gas station on New Year’s Day.

According to a news release from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. to Sam’s Pit Stop, located at 4236 Sam Potts Highway near Hallsboro, after receiving a report of man suffering from a stab wound.

When deputies arrived, Lake Waccamaw police were already on scene and the victim, Bradley Joseph Martin, 30, was being treated for injuries he sustained to his chest, arm, and leg.

Sheriff’s investigators interviewed witnesses and viewed surveillance video which led them to identify two suspects and suspect vehicle.

The investigation revealed that Martin was sitting in his vehicle at the business when he was approached by one of the suspects, James Levi Clewis, 29, of Chadbourn. Clewis alleged struck Martin in the face, forcing him to exit the vehicle.

Clewis then continued the assault, and eventually stabbed Martin, investigators say.

Martin was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, while Clewis sustained a hand injury that required medical attention at the hospital. A deputy escorted Clewis for treatment, and took him to the sheriff’s office for questioning once he was released from the hospital.

Afterward, Clewis was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

While being booked at the jail, detention officers discovered a cigarette box containing cigarettes and suboxone strips hidden inside Clewis’ buttocks.

He was additionally charged with felony possession of a controlled substance on jail premises and misdemeanor possession of tobacco by an inmate.

Clewis was given a total bond of $63,500.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have information concerning this investigation, contact the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 642-6551.
