BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The NCDOT has suspend the Maco Road (N.C. 87) bridge replacement until further notice. The closure was previously scheduled to begin on May 9 and on May 2.
“The N.C. Department of Transportation has suspended the project after environmental agencies found a protected species, Carolina Wren, nesting under the existing bridge,” writes an NCDOT release.
Maco Road (N.C. 87) will be closed for several months once work begins.
The road will be closed due to the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge over Batarora Branch. During the closure, drivers will be detoured onto U.S. 74/76 and Interstate 140 to access either side of the highway.
The project is estimated to cost $1.2 million.
