WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The remnants of Hurricane Sally are slogging across the Carolinas. Your First Alert Forecast features scattered showers and isolated gusty storms, some of which will be heavy at times. One to three inches of rain with locally higher amounts of soaking rain are possible for the Cape Fear Region. Stay alert for spotty poor-drainage flooding in times and places of heaviest rain and for the chance for an isolated severe-rated thunderstorm. As those Sally remnants move on, shower coverage will taper Friday and Saturday as compared to Thursday.
Hurricane Teddy, meanwhile, will become monstrous in size and intensity through the weekend as it stems from the deep tropical Atlantic Ocean toward Bermuda. Meteorological computer guidance suggests Teddy will remain east of the Carolinas and simply be a long-term surf and rip current generator. Of course, we will monitor it in any case!
Elsewhere across the tropics, an area of low pressure in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico became Tropical Depression Twenty-two late Thursday afternoon. If this system become a tropical storm and is named, it would claim the final name on the for the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season list, Wilfred. This storm could strike south Texas or northern Mexico early next week.
Another area of low pressure further away from home in the eastern Atlantic has medium odds for tropical development. This system could also become a tropical depression over the weekend as it tracks west-northwest. Now, if this feature is named after Wilfred, we will transfer to the Greek alphabet and this storm would be named “Alpha”. The last and only other time we had to use the Greek alphabet was in 2005.
