WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Police in Wilmington say a man refused to pull over for a traffic stop Sunday afternoon in the Creekwood community, leading them on a chase that ended with a multi-vehicle wreck.

Matthew Kennedy, 46, of Wilmington, has been charged with:

  • larceny of a motor vehicle
  • possession of a stolen vehicle
  • felony flee to elude arrest
  • reckless driving and hit and run

Police say Kennedy refused to stop on Emory Street at approximately 5 p.m. and he was traveling at a high rate of speed when he caused a four-vehicle wreck on Market Street.

Multiple people were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Kennedy and the passengers in his car were uninjured.

Police say they believe Kennedy was driving under the influence at the time of the crash.

Jamaal Johnson, a passenger on Kennedy’s car, was charged with resisting arrest.

Video from a nearby dash cam caught the end of the chase, the wreck and the immediate aftermath.

The crash happens around 20 seconds into the video.
