CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday afternoon to officially open the Joseph Ryder Lewis Jr. Civil War Park at Carolina Beach.

The park is built around remnants of the fortifications of the “Sugar Loaf Line of Defense” from the Civil War and is located on the north side of Publix market at 1018 Lake Park Blvd. It features a raised walkway and picnic areas.

The preservation and development of the park was a joint effort between a committee of historians and the Town of Carolina Beach, and was made possible by the contributions of multiple organizations.
