WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A minor died and another was hospitalized after police say they fled a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle before crashing at a Dawson Street intersection Monday evening.
According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, officers initiated a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle at the intersection of South 16th and Castle streets around 7:20 p.m.
“The suspect fled from officers and didn’t stop at the red light at South 13th and Wooster St. The officers stopped at that light and waited until traffic was clear before pursuing the vehicle,” the release stated.
WPD officials say officers were a block behind the vehicle when it ran the red light at South 13th and Dawson streets and crashed into the driver-side of a flatbed tow truck, causing the truck to spin around.
Officers then pulled the minor driver out of the vehicle and performed CPR until paramedics could arrive at the scene. The driver eventually died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in the crash.
A passenger in the vehicle, who also is a minor, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tow truck was treated at the scene and released.
“The driver is suspected of being involved in multiple vehicle break ins. In addition, a stolen gun was recovered off of the driver,” the release stated.
The WPD said no further details will be released at this time and said the N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
