WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Parents brought their children to UNCW’s Hanover Gym on Friday to experience a little bit of every sport the school has to offer.

Student-athletes showed the participants what’s it like to play each sport and the training they implemented during their practices.

The inspiration to get young girls involved in several sports comes from the National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is on Feb. 7.

Student-athletes shared why it’s important to introduce sports to girls of all ages.

“Obviously, sports are thought of as masculine…like men tend to be more famous for their sports and what they do. And it’s important to let the younger generations know that like, women can be great at sports too, girls swim, go out there and be Olympians, and win the Olympics and do awesome things in sports,” said Bailey Tart.

The sports on display included tennis, soccer, softball, basketball, track, volleyball, gymnastics, golf and swimming and diving.

“If you get them out there, expose them to a day like this, you never know when somebody gets that excitement, and they find that ‘Wow, I really like this,’ and then they continue with it”, says Cindy Ho, UNCW women’s golf coach.
