WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Kelly House, which helped women struggling with addiction who were pregnant or had a child under 6 months old, closed on June 30.
The house was built in 1988 and one of its founders, Mary Kelly, passed away in April.
The program ultimately came to a close due to a lack of funding.
The now-former board members say while the program is coming to an unfortunate end, they described watching women overcome their addiction as a powerful memory that will stay with them forever.
”It was a gift. Watching them recover. Watching them go to meetings. Get a sponsor. Being a parent just… the only word I have for it is really truly a gift to be able to be apart of that,” Linda Baum, former board member, said.
A gathering is being held at the Harrelson Center on Thursday afternoon to remember the program.
