WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – With District Attorney Ben David planning to step down later this year, the Republican and Democratic parties are putting their weight behind nominees to take the spot in the November Election.

The New Hanover County Republican Party has announced that it plans to nominate Jason Smith to run as a candidate for the New Hanover and Pender Co. District Attorney election.

Per the party, he will officially be named the nominee in August.

An announcement from Smith says he started as Assistant District Attorney for the district on March 1, 2010 and has been there since then. He attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington to earn a bachelor’s in business/economics and then attended the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, to earn a Juris Doctor.

Smith was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from April 2003 to July 2004 and resigned from the Army as a captain in 2005, according to him.

“As your District Attorney, I will follow the law and apply my years of experience and knowledge for the benefit of New Hanover and Pender Counties,” Smith said in an announcement.

The Democratic Prosecutorial District Committee is nominating Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Zimmer Donaldson to take the position.

“Ms. Donaldson, a native of Wilmington, has served as an Assistant District Attorney for nearly a decade, and her unwavering commitment to justice, dedication to community service, and extensive legal experience make her the ideal candidate to represent the Democratic Party and uphold our values in the judicial system. As a graduate of American University’s Washington College of Law and a mother of two young daughters, she has dedicated her life to public service and our local community, particularly the most-vulnerable and underrepresented members,” a NHCDP announcement states.

Donaldson says in the announcement that she is honored to accept the nomination.

“Together, we can build a safer and more-equitable future for all local residents,” Donaldson states.
