‘It could have been me’: Woman recalls similar encounter with HCPD officer involved in deadly beach crash

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – An upstate woman is recounting the scary situation involving an Horry Couty police truck on the beach when she visited Garden City last year.

She came out unscathed but can’t help but shake the feelings that have resurfaced following the tragic death of 66-year-old Sandy Schultz-Peters who was killed earlier this month.

Last fall, an Horry County beach patrol ran over Shana Salley’s items moments after she was lying on her beach chair in Garden City. She said it was the same officer involved in a deadly beach incident earlier this month.

Salley said she was on her way back to her beach house when someone came up to her screaming that the beach patrol had run her over her beach chair and towel. She said she came back to her spot and found Lcpl. Julian “Duke” Brown was behind the wheel and another officer tried to get her mangled items out from under the hood of the car.

She said Brown gave her his business card and apologized for running her stuff over.

The death of Schultz Peter’s near Springmaid Pier has sparked deep emotion in her and even her kids.

“My daughter, we talked earlier this morning she said, ‘Gosh Mom that could have been you’ You’re right,” Salley said. “I think at that point, she was down there with her friends. It didn’t really face her too much then. But I think, after this accident happened, it kinda opened our eyes a little bit more.”

Salley expressed she is thankful she was unharmed, but feels she could have spoken up sooner about her experience to protect others.

“I don’t think there was no ill intent by any means, but there is some careless activity on his part for sure,” Salley said.

WMBF News has reached out to Horry County Police for comment on this incident but has not heard back.

WMBF News has also submitted a Freedom of Information Act to learn more about Salley’s incident.
