WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The 11th annual Evan Cup Outreach Invitational soccer game is set for this weekend to honor one boy’s love of the game, who sadly died in an accident.

Coach Kim Crabbe, the founder of Cape Fear Outreach, visited the WECT studio to share how the event has grown in the community’s support of the memory of Evan Peck.

“It’s grown in the most beautiful way and aspect that anyone can think of,” Crabbe said. “You’re reaching more youth and you’re bringing more awareness to the community, you’re bringing more options to some of the youth that may not be able to play at these elite levels or some of the local clubs that we have.”

Peck died in 2003 in a freak accident at only seven years old. Crabbe says that Peck was a ‘soccer head,’ and that he had a love of the sport as well as a love of caring and giving.

“His mom’s last memory, one of them was, he gave one of the kids an opportunity to score,” Crabbe said. “He gave someone else the opportunity, and I think that’s what our outreach program really strives to do here in the community.”

Crabbe says the event offers youth the opportunity to play where youth would not be able to and find fellowship in the community.

The game will be held at the Williston Middle School Track on June 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The game is free for ages 5-17.
