MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A North Carolina woman is accusing an amusement park in Myrtle Beach of negligence, claiming her husband is now paralyzed because of one of its rides.
The woman filed a lawsuit in Horry County on Thursday, naming Family Kingdom and Ocean Avenue Attractions, among others.
The Guilford County woman said her husband rode Family Kingdom’s popular Swamp Fox Roller Coaster in July 2021.
After riding the wooden roller coaster, her husband suffered an acute injury to his spinal cord, which caused quadriplegia, according to the suit.
The plaintiff alleges that the coaster was not examined properly, creating unsafe conditions and making the ride “more dangerous than a typical roller coaster.”
“Defendants knew or should have known that the roller coaster required extensive maintenance and refurbishment prior to use and encouraging persons to use the roller coaster when it was unreasonably dangerous and unsafe with a significant potential to cause serious injuries to its users,” the suit reads.

The Swamp Fox was also the subject of another lawsuit filed in 2019.
Public records show the plaintiff in that case alleged the ride aggravated her prior back injuries, and was “much more rough than a normal roller coaster.”
However, the case was ultimately dismissed in 2020, with a judge ruling that the plaintiff failed to prove Family Kingdom did anything wrong or caused her injuries.
The Swamp Fox first opened in Myrtle Beach in 1966, according to Family Kingdom’s website.
