South Carolina Highway Patrol said Brown was driving a Horry County police pickup truck when he hit Sandy Schultz-Peters on the beach back in June.

Troopers said the truck was coming onto the beach from the Nash Street beach access, near Springmaid Pier, when it turned onto the sand and hit Schultz-Peters.

Brown was placed on administrative leave following the crash. The victim’s family has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Horry County Police Department.

He had been with HCPD since 1988. During that time he served as the beach safety director.
