‘He had a heart of gold’: Family remembers decorated veteran who jumped off Georgetown bridge after crash

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WMBF) – A family is left grieving and searching for answers, as they reflect on the life of 37-year-old Shawn Lauver.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office recovered Lauver’s body on Tuesday, by the L.H. Siau Memorial Bridge. Deputies said the L.H. Siau Memorial Bridge is the same one he jumped off after being involved in a car crash on Sunday.

On Wednesday, the family reflected on Lauver’s life. A life they said was filled with military service.

Lauver’s parents shared he was a North Carolina veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. They said he worked as an Aviation Technician for Black Hawks and other helicopters.

His parents said Lauver was deployed on tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. During his service, Lauver earned the Army Achievement Medal and Army Commendation Medal, for his repeated acts of heroism and outstanding achievements.

However, Lauver’s parents said his life of service turned into a struggle when he returned home from being a soldier.

”When he jumped, it wasn’t Shawn jumping. It was his PTSD and everything he was fighting,” said his mother, Eveanne Lauver.

His parents said they had been trying to get him help, but a judge could not keep him committed. His father, who also served in the U.S. Army, for over 30 years said he understood the struggle Lauver was facing.

“Some people come back and they’re jumping out of their seats when somebody blows the horn when you go by. We tried everything we could. Everything,” said his father, Brad Lauver.

While the family is heartbroken, they are choosing to remember their favorite memories of Lauver.

“He had a heart of gold. He would do anything for you,” said Brad Lauver.

“He would give you the shirt off his back. He was kind and considerate,” said Eveanna Lauver.

His parents are now working to advocate for other service members battling similar issues, to prevent more families from losing loved ones.

“He was fighting something awful, that a lot of our soldiers come back and nobody realizes how they are coming back,” said Eveanna Lauver.

Until they meet again, Lauver’s parents said their son will always be in their hearts.

“I’d just tell him I love him, and I always wish the best for him,” said Brad Lauver.

“I just hope now that my son is at peace with his body and his mind,” said Eveanna Lauver.

Lauver’s loved ones said they will continue to keep his name alive, as they fight for more resources and help for veterans.
