WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The 10th annual Historically Black College and University Alumni cookout took place Saturday evening.
The community met in Ogden Park proudly representing their Alma Maters.
The yearly gathering is a time for those to catch up on projects they develop for the community and network with rising freshmen who plan on attending an HBCU.
Students have over 100 HBCUs they can attend across the country. That’s why one organizer says he wants to help anyone who is interested.
“We got new students here, also this year who are going to A&T in the fall, so we are trying to introduce them to some of the alumni in the area and also support them as they go on to pursue their educational degrees,” said Tony Carter.
Greek Life is a huge part of HBCU culture and the Divine 9 (black fraternities and sororities) showed off love for their organizations at the event as well.
This event brings people from both in and out of state.
“I came from Camden, South Carolina because my father’s friend invited me,” attendee Vdell Carter said. “I was an undergrad student at a P.W.I. (Predominately White Institution) but now I attend Winston Salem State University as a grad student, so I came to get some HBCU experience and be around some more of my HBCU people.”
Wilmington has several HBCU Alumni chapters that are active in the community. The best way to find those organizations is by clicking here to join this group.
