WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A former New Hanover High School baseball star was called up to the MLB on Wednesday, May 1.
Blake Walston was brought up by the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of a matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to the Diamondbacks’ announcement.
During Wednesday’s game, Walston pitched 3.2 innings, recording five strikeouts while allowing three hits.
He’s played for the Diamondbacks’ triple-A affiliate for the past five years, and is the highest-drafted Wildcat since the Boston Red Sox selected Trot Nixon seventh overall in 1993.
As a senior at NHHS, Walston went 12-0 with a 0.20 earned run average. He struck out 119 batters in 68.2 innings pitched, and was selected as the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year.
