GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The former head of an Eastern Carolina animal shelter was charged today, just days after his abrupt resignation.

Chad Singleton was charged with four counts of forgery, four counts of uttering, and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

Singleton had been the animal shelter director for Pitt County since August 9, 2021.

Pitt County says Singleton resigned last Wednesday, with an effective date of Friday. He had been placed on investigation status a week before he resigned.

Deputies say they were made aware of problems at the Red Oak Fire Department where Singleton was deputy chief. They say some fraudulent documents were discovered that were submitted to FEMA.

Warrants say the crimes happened on July 29, 2022, and the forged documents were used to falsely satisfy a FEMA grant for fire gear.

Singleton turned himself in at the jail and was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond.
