WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Flood watches have been issued for counties in the Cape Fear region.

Brunswick and Columbus counties are under a flood watch as Tropical Storm Chantal approaches the South Carolina coast.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Impacts include excessive runoff, which can create flooding in rivers, creeks, and streams. Ponding in roadways is expected as heavy rain is anticipated to begin late Saturday night and continue into Sunday.

New Hanover County is under a coastal flood advisory.

NWS states up to one-half foot of flooding above ground level is forecasted in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

This flooding is expected to occur near the lower Cape Fear River, which includes portions of downtown Wilmington.

The coastal flooding advisory for New Hanover County is in place until 9 p.m.

The flood watch is in effect for Brunswick and Columbus counties through Monday evening.

Use caution when driving and never drive on flooded or barricaded roads.
