WINNABOW, N.C. (WECT) – It’s been over a month since a powerful unnamed storm left parts of Brunswick County underwater.

One of the businesses hardest hit was Fix A Friend in Winnabow. They’re now operating out of a mobile unit until renovations are complete.

Around three feet of water forced staff to evacuate 80 cats and 20 dogs by boat.

Now, they’re on a path to rebuild, starting by gutting the lower half of the walls.

Four employees lost their cars in the flood, including Assistant Manager Rebecca Leonard.

Leonard says none of their operations now would not be possible without donations from the community.

“We’ve had a lot of businesses as far as Wilmington, down in Southport, some even down to South Carolina that have done donation drives, and then donated money to us and supplies. The unwavering support comes from the community,” Leonard said.

Leonard said due to operating out of a mobile clinic, staff can serve around 50 pets per day, instead of around 150 they could serve previously.

“We’re just trying to do what we can for as long as we can,” Leonard said.

Renovations are set to take around six months. Leonard said they plan to raise the business up by six feet to avoid flooding again.
