WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The UNCW women’s basketball team held its first-ever Skills and Wellness clinic at Trask Coliseum.
The Universities Collective – OneSeahawk – put on the event to raise money for the team. OneSeahawk is a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) collective that is dedicated to supporting UNCW student-athletes.
Its mission is to create innovative opportunities for Seahawk athletes to thrive both on and off the field, helping them build and maximize their personal brands. The clinic allowed kids in 8th grade and under to practice with the team, receive autographs, and had photo opportunities.
After the event had ended, clinic participants enjoyed free food and were encouraged to stick around and watch the teams practice. Parents also had events lined up for them as well.
The Head Coach for the women’s basketball team Nicole Woods felt it was important for the parents to get something out of this event, not just the kids.
“While the kids are in with the clinic, we wanted to provide some value to the parents as well,” said Woods.
Five vendors were present, including the stretch lab, which gave complimentary stretches to the parents.
Taylor Henderson, the shooting guard for the women’s basketball team was excited about this opportunity to connect with the community and teach kids basketball.
“I have a shooting station, and it was very competitive, the kids were really engaged and listening. That’s probably the most exciting thing that I’ve been doing at this clinic,” said Henderson.
Both Woods and Henderson encourage everyone to come out and “Pack Trask” this season. The first home game is on November 10.
