WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – After making a Monday morning landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast, Debby will meander through the Carolinas at a distressingly slow pace… heavily influencing your First Alert Forecast for the Cape Fear Region through at least Friday. This is definitely a week to have your WECT Weather App set to ping you with what may be a large menu of National Weather Service bulletins – from flooding to marine to tornado to tropical storm and even possibly hurricane.
Rain: Expect scattered to numerous, torrential rain bands through Friday. Rain will total more than six inches; many spots could net more than ten. Exercise caution when traveling, especially in areas prone to flooding. Minor to moderate river flooding remains possible by this weekend, also.
Severe Storms: Stay alert as heavier rain bands may leverage enough spin from the parent storm for isolated tornadoes – especially now through Thursday.
Strong Winds: East and southeast winds will gust up to tropical storm force – that’s in the 30s, 40s, and 50s mph – Wednesday and Thursday. Be advised that, if Debby’s center jogs back over the warm Atlantic a little longer, hurricane winds aren’t entirely out of the question, but they are certainly less likely. Stay alert for those aforementioned bulletins and, in any case, secure loose yard and patio items and keep your devices charged should any power outages develop.
Marine Impacts: High surf, rip currents, hazardous seas, and isolated waterspouts should encourage you to stay out of / off of the water through at least Friday.
Hang on for more settled weather – with sun and lower storm odds – to redevelop over the weekend and into next week. In the meantime, thanks for staying with your First Alert Weather Team on TV, online, on your WECT Weather App, and with your comprehensive Hurricane Season guide at wect.com/hurricane.
