First Alert Forecast: rip currents, low rain odds, and toasty temps as summer officially arrives

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Your First Alert Forecast opens with a toasty Thursday across the Cape Fear Region. Expect high temperatures well into the 80s to locally near 90 on the mainland, and fitting for the summer solstice at 4:51 p.m. Light to moderate east and southeast breezes will whisk a few clouds across an otherwise sunny sky as odds for rain stay low. In the warm summer surf, please continue to be leery of an elevated rip current risk.

Your First Alert Forecast for the next several days trends hotter with more in the way of sweaty 90s for daytime highs and steamy 70s for nighttime lows. Chances for showers and storms include 20% Friday, 30% Saturday and Sunday, 40% Monday, 30% Tuesday, and 20% Wednesday. Hopefully, some rain will arrest the development of drought.

In the tropics: Alberto, the first storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, will generate big rain as it weakens over parts of Mexico and South Texas Thursday. Across the basin, additional tropical disturbances carry medium development odds in the coming days; direct problems from these appear unlikely for the Cape Fear Region.
