BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – State and federal officials along with Duke Energy representatives will be at a test of emergency response plans for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant on Tuesday, July 30.

The exercise will focus on the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone around the plant and the command, control and response functions of the state, county nad utility partners.

“The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency require such exercises every two years to test response plans within a 10-mile radius of the plant.  Once every eight years, the NRC and FEMA requires state and local officials to exercise response plans within a 50-mile radius of the plant, including impacts to agricultural interests, food supply and plans for return home after evacuation,” a county announcement states.

The public is invited to an outcome meeting by FEMA evaluators set for 11 a.m. on August 2 at the Brunswick Energy and Education Center at 8520 River Rd. SE, Southport.
