WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – In partnership with area farmers, Feast Down East is offering a monthly subscription that will allow residents to get local produce once a week.

According to the nonprofit, those interested in the Community Supported Agriculture Box Program can subscribe now.

JT Crawford is the food hub operations manager at Feast Down East and says it’s an easy way to get access to nutrient-dense foods.

He says another benefit of the program is that the produce will be fresh: anywhere from 1-3 days old. Whereas if you bought it at a grocery store, it could be weeks old.

“Working with all these local farmers, just the quality tastes so much better,” Crawford said.

Crawford says the program not only keeps money local, but it also benefits farmers who might not be able to sell to big grocery chains.

“All the items are from local farms. It is genuinely just to support them on top of just like regular sales that they have through our market channels and every dollar really helps with local farms,” Crawford said.

“Each box contains produce from the multiple, local farmers that Feast Down East supports through its Food Hub distribution and programs. You can support the non-profit and our regional farmers by purchasing your CSA subscription for the month of August. It is from the support of the community that Feast Down East is able to continue strengthening our local food system, from agriculture to consumers,” Feast Down East states.

Each subscription will include four boxes, which can be picked up weekly on Thursdays at the following locations:

  • The Historic Train Depot in Burgaw from 1 to 3 p.m.
  • The Butchers Market in Wilmington from 4 to 6 p.m.
  • The Veggie Wagon at Masonboro in Wilmington from 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Brunswick Beer & Cider in Leland, NC from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The subscription costs $175.

“Each week customers will have the option to purchase additional products to be delivered with their CSA box, including eggs, goat cheese, honey and meat. Details on how to add these products will be shared the Friday before the first pickup,” the announcement adds.
