WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – Wrightsville Beach town officials have confirmed a driver was killed in a crash into two homes on South Waynick Blvd on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
According to Mayor Darryl Mills, the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed at around 5:30 a.m. while moving south on Waynick Blvd (U.S. 76) when he hit something, went airborne, hit a second-story porch then clipped another house and landed.
A press release from the Wrightsville Beach Police Department states police found an unconscious male who had sustained serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m. Preliminary information suggests that speed and road conditions were a factor in the accident, police said.
911 calls obtained by WECT on Aug. 14 indicate that a witness to the crash attempted to help the victim, and that the caller and another person on the scene were trying to talk to the driver. The CAD report and one of the callers mention the smell of propane near the car.
“I am on Wrightsville beach headed towards the south end. Some sports car must have been going 100 flew by me and flew into a house,” one caller said. “…oh my god, that scared the s*** out of me.”
The incident is an ongoing investigation.
