ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A driver died after they and their vehicle were swept away by floodwaters near the Robeson and Columbus county lines on Saturday, Aug. 10, according to rescue crews.

In a Facebook post by Lumberton Rescue and EMS, crews confirmed it happened on Old Whiteville Road. As of Saturday night, the road remains closed as it’s flooded in several locations.

First responders were called for what was initially thought would be a rescue when a motorist and their vehicle were swept away by running flood waters. It turned into a recover mission when crews realized the driver did not survive.

Authorities estimated the running water was eight- to 12-inches deep.
