Crews respond to gas leak in downtown Wilmington area

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Crews responded to a gas leak in the area of downtown Wilmington Tuesday morning, Aug. 27, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Per the WPD and Wilmington Fire Department, crews temporarily blocked off 5th Avenue between Wright and Marstellar streets in all directions.

Some residents were evacuated from the area.

The WFD says that a 2 inch gas main was hit by an excavator during construction work.

The road has since been reopened.
