WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – June is still the target date for the opening of the Salvation Army’s new Center for Hope.

Major Ken Morris showed WECT the behind-the-scenes of the new facility off of 30th Street. Drivers can see crews working on the facility while traveling along MLK Parkway.

The first phase is already fully funded.

Inside there’s a large kitchen for community meals, and housing for men, women and families.

The center will also be a community resource in the event of extreme weather.

“Kind of like an all-purpose room. Until we build a second building. This will be the largest room where we can do our life skills classes here and also we can put the tables and chairs to the side when storms come our way, we’re going to use this room and put cots in this room for emergency shelter as well,” Major Morris said.

The Salvation Army is also opening up its dining room to the public. The kitchen will be equipped to offer meals for anyone who’d like to join them or take them to go.
