WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A Safe Place held its annual luncheon to raise money for victims of sex trafficking on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The money will go towards building a cottage for victims to stay in, which would become the third safe place cottage in the county.

Organizers also benefited from guests who bought furniture for the cottage along with direct contributions.

“It’s teaching people to be compassionate and not judge people for their situation. And another thing too is; we want dispel the stigma that is around substance use, mental health and trafficking and exploitation,” said A Safe Place Executive Director Dawn Ferrer.

In the 12 years since its founding, the staff at A Safe Place have helped more than 2,000 sex trafficking survivors.
