WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – From soccer ball toys to Rainbow jump ropes, students at Rachel Freeman Elementary can shop at a store inside their school.
The students earn dojo points—essentially rewards points—and can shop once a month for the items. Savanna Stiles, the counselor at Rachel Freeman is hoping to build the store’s inventory. She was asking for donations through DonorsChoose, an online charity that helps educators get funding for school projects.
“The goal of this project is to increase positive behavior school wide from Kindergarten-5th grade,” Stiles said on her DonorsChoose page. “These items allow the students to have a goal to work for by demonstrating positive behaviors. The school store operates monthly. Students earn dojo points for following expectations, showing kindness, helping others, etc. They can choose to spend them short-term (each month) or long-term (until they reach their goal).”
Ms. Stiles needed $636 to buy all of the items on her wish list, and that money has been raised, meaning that DonorsChoose will purchase the items and deliver them to the school.
