City of Southport releases names of victims in deadly mass shooting

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – The City of Southport has released the names of the victims killed and injured in the deadly mass shooting on Saturday.

The shooting at the American Fish Company on Sept. 27 left three people dead and several others injured.

The city has confirmed the following people died in the shooting:

  • Joy Rogers, 64, from Southport
  • Solomon Banjo, 36, Charlottesville, VA
  • Michael Durbin, 56, Galena, OH

It was originally reported that five people were injured in the shooting; now the city has confirmed that six people were injured.

The city has confirmed the following people were injured:

  • Jackson Schurtz, 38, Afton, VA
  • William Parent, 64, Oak Island, NC
  • John Barlow, 63, Amityville, NY
  • Lauren Buscher, 54, Wheaton, IL
  • Thomas Lafferty, 58, Oak Island, NC
  • Tammy Hirt-Huff, 59, Oak Island, NC

According to a spokesperson with the city, the six people injured during the shooting are out of the hospital.

“It is asked that the public be respectful of these victims, their families, and their privacy as they try to navigate this difficult situation,” the city said in a statement.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Solomon Banjo served as the Executive Director of Client and Market Insights at Eon, a healthcare technology company. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Life Sciences and Tech Innovations at the Advisory Board, a healthcare organization.

Michael Durbin’s mother-in-law told WECT over the phone that Durbin was married and had a “big family” with a few daughters and one son. They are spending this difficult time together. She said it is still too soon for them to speak about what happened or who Durbin was as a person.

Authorities allege that Nigel Edge, the suspected shooter, “targeted” American Fish Company and say it was “highly premeditated.”

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said they believed Edge acted as a lone wolf.

The investigation remains active, and the city will provide updates as they become available.
