EUGENE, Ore. (WBTV) – A star athlete from the Charlotte area is headed back to the Olympics for a second time.
Anna Cockrell, a graduate of Providence Day School, finished second in Sunday’s trials for the 400-meter women’s hurdle event.
Cockrell was a five-time All-American during her high school career. She then went west and ran collegiately at the University of Southern California.
Only Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone beat the Charlotte native Sunday, breaking another world record with her 50.65-second time. Cockrell finished in 52.64 seconds.
Cockrell finished eighth in the Tokyo Games, also running the 400-meter hurdles.
The 26-year-old is the daughter of Kieth Cockrell, president of Bank of America Charlotte, and the younger sister of former Carolina Panthers cornerback Ross Cockrell.
This summer’s Olympic games will be held in Paris, France. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for July 26.
