WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has announced that a two-week flushing program will start at 11 p.m. on July 8 in the Monterey Heights water system.

“System flushing is a routine maintenance operation conducted by thousands of water utilities every year. During flushing, water is forced through pipes at high velocity and systematically flushed out of the fire hydrants, removing accumulated sediment. To reduce impacts to customers, flushing will be conducted between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday nights through Friday mornings,” a CFPUA announcement states.

The process does not impact the safety of drinking water, and boil water advisories are not expected.

Zones 1A, 1B, and 1C will be flushed from July 8-12, and the other zones will be flushed from July 15-19. You can view maps here.

“Customers may experience periods of low pressure and/or water discoloration while flushing is being conducted in their areas. Customers who do experience discoloration are advised to run the cold water for at least one to three minutes to allow the lines to clear. CFPUA also asks customers to be aware of crews working in their neighborhoods and to drive safely in and around work zones,” the announcement continues.
