BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County Schools Superintendent Dale Cole told the school board on June 25 that Cedar Grove Middle School and Town Creek Middle School have been chosen by him for the BCS Phone-Free Schools pilot program.
“The two BCS middle schools were selected due to similar enrollment numbers, similar student demographics, and representation from various areas of Brunswick County. Data from student discipline referrals pertaining to cell phones was also a factor in the selection of the two middle schools,” a BCS announcement states.
The school plans on using Yondr’s phone-storing devices that have been used at several other schools to keep kids off their phones at school.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a focused and productive learning environment for our students, we believe that this pilot program will aid us in minimizing distractions, promoting social interaction, and encouraging responsible device use,” Cole said. “We will provide clear guidelines for students on how to store their phones securely, and our teachers and staff will be available to address any questions you or your child may have.”
The pilot will start this fall, and the district says it will consider adding more schools during the second semester if the program is successful.
