LAKE TOXAWAY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The North Carolina Medical Examiner has released the cause of death of a camper who was found dead at Trails Carolina Camp earlier this year.
Deputies were called to Trails Carolina on February 3, 2024, in reference to a 12-year-old not breathing. After crews arrived, they worked to try to save the child, but they realized he had been dead for ‘some time.’
On Monday, June 24, 2024, an autopsy report from the Medical Examiner revealed the child’s cause of death was asphyxia due to smothering. They also ruled it as a homicide.
According to the report, the child was inside a bivy and positioned in a way that allowed the waterproof material to fall onto his head and face. The report mentions the outer, waterproof opening was fully secured and closed with an alarm but the child could not get to it.
The Transylvania Sheriff’s Office said they will be reviewing the autopsy report in conjunction with the overall criminal investigation and meeting with the District Attorney of Prosecutorial District 42.
