Carolina Panthers benching Bryce Young in favor of veteran Andy Dalton
Former No. 1 pick had 0-2 start
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The Carolina Panthers and head coach Dave Canales have benched former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young in favor of veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.
Young has been off to a bad start to start his second NFL season. In Sunday’s loss to the Chargers the former Alabama quarterback threw for only 84 yards to tie for the fourth fewest in team history for a quarterback with at least 25 pass attempts.
Through two games of the season the Panthers have been outscored 72-13.
“This is something after I watch the film, I looked at it had a thought started working on talking to the guys that I make decisions with,” Canales said. “Certainly a lot of parties involved and ultimately this comes on me and my number one responsibility is making sure the Panthers win and so this moves puts us in the best place to do that.”
Canales held a news conference addressing the change at quarterback.
The Panthers moved up eight spots in the 2023 NFL Draft to draft Young, who is now 2-16 since becoming the starter.
Dalton, 36, started Week 3 of the 2023 season while Young was out with an ankle injury. Dalton passed for 361 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
