NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – The town of North Topsail Beach has been notified of a body that washed ashore on base at Camp Lejeune, according to a release from the town.

The town says North Topsail Beach police and fire crews worked with Camp Lejeune and Marine Fisheries in the search of a 14-year-old from the Goldsboro area who went missing in the New River Inlet on the Fourth of July.

According to the town, crews continued search and recovery efforts through Saturday. They were notified at 9:44 a.m. Sunday that a body washed ashore at Camp Lejeune.

The town says family has been notified of the discovery, but it will not release the name until a positive identification has been made.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” says the release from the town.

Authorities moved to a search and recovery effort Friday after the search and rescue of the missing 14-year-old was unsuccessful.
