MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The Horry County Coroner’s Office released the identity of a teenager who drowned after disappearing off the Myrtle Beach coast this past weekend.
The body of 15-year-old Edwin Gonzalez-Rosendo was recovered Sunday night near 18th Avenue South, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. Willard added that Gonzalez-Rosendo was visiting the area from Shannon, North Carolina.
Gonzalez-Rosendo’s sister spoke to WMBF News on Monday and said it would have marked his first day of high school. She said her brother planned to serve in the military and loved to play soccer. She also described the teenager as someone who had a cheerful nature, bright smile and kind heart.
Gonzalez-Rosendo’s sister said their lives are now forever changed.
“We’re thankful that at least we got his body back. Not the way we wanted to, but at least we have this and we have closure now,” said his sister, Jazmin Gonzalez-Rosendo.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department told WMBF News that Gonzalez-Rosendo’s body washed ashore shortly after 6:30 p.m. in that area.
Officials said Gonzalez-Rosendo and another swimmer, were in reportedly distress just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of 12th Avenue South as lifeguards, ocean rescue and beach patrol swimmers entered the water.
WMBF News was told by the family that the other swimmer was a cousin of Gonzalez-Rosendo. The cousin was checked out on the beach but then stayed to help search for Gonzalez-Rosendo.
Beachgoers who saw the incident said they were shocked by the amount of help.
“There were like 25-30 emergency vehicles parked in the area. It was just a huge, bright blur, red. All the lights going on at the same time, you know? It drew your attention,” said one witness, Thomas Walker.
Walker said he couldn’t imagine what Gonzalez-Rosendo’s family is going though and said he hopes they find peace in the midst of this tragic situation.
“It’s always a loss. Especially thinking about the parents. It’s a heartfelt loss that you can’t really explain,” said Walker.
Myrtle Beach police are investigating Gonzalez-Rosendo’s death.
