WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve is now certified as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) as of Friday, Oct. 18.

Representatives from the Cape Fear Garden Club and UNCW’s Sustainability Department and Senior Lecturer Roger Shrew posted the signage at the 10-acre forest at the center of campus.

The entrance to the preserve is across from the Fisher Student Union and Warwick Center.

Some of the requirements for the certification include multiple food sources, water sources, protection/cover, quality habitat, areas to raise young, sustainability of the natural area, avoiding pesticides, and eliminating invasives.

Shrew explains that the certification illustrates the college’s efforts to preserve our ecosystems and the biodiversity of natural areas.
