WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The second annual Battle of the Badges blood drive between the Wilmington fire and police departments is set for Thursday, Aug. 29.

The two departments will compete to see which one can get the most people to donate blood from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Red Cross building at 1102 S 16th St.

You can sign up to donate for the drive online via the Red Cross website using the sponsor code “ILM BADGES”.

“Right now, the supply of type O blood products is so low that hospital distributions of this vital blood type have been reduced below what hospitals need in recent weeks. Overall, the Red Cross-national blood supply has fallen by more than 25% since July 1. Blood product distributions to hospitals are outpacing the number of blood donations coming in, which is rapidly drawing down the blood supply,” a Red Cross spokesperson said.
